Haitian Singer and His Guitar Fight Urge to Weep
By SIMON ROMERO
Published: March 4, 2010
The New York Times’s Simon Romero tracks down a popular Haitian street singer Beken, sharing with readers the music many locals have turned to for relief in the wake of the country’s devastating January earthquake. Despite his local popularity, Romero finds Beken living in one of the country’s most desperate refugee camps, scraping together an existence, like so many others, from within the paper-thin walls of a tent. Beken joins Romero in a local restaurant to share some of his music, and help communicate the inconceivable suffering of the Haitian people.
